About Notation Lab
Notation Lab is a free browser-based music practice app for learning to read and write standard sheet music. Its exercises connect written notation with keyboard input and sound.
What you can practise
- Treble and bass clef notes, ledger lines and accidentals.
- Sight-reading phrases and matching pitches by ear.
- Simple, compound, odd, additive and changing metres.
- Monophonic writing exercises and MIDI export.
How mastery works
Each task combines successful answers, practice volume and difficulty. A single correct answer cannot fill the bar. Mastery describes these app exercises; it is not a music qualification or a complete assessment of musicianship.
Browser requirements
Modern browsers can use the virtual and computer keyboards. Safari does not currently provide native Web MIDI on the tested Mac. Physical MIDI requires a supporting browser and device permission. Audio starts after user interaction.
Project and licensing
The app uses VexFlow for engraving. Read the VexFlow MIT licence. Notation Lab is an independent learning tool and is not affiliated with Apple or Logic Pro.
